Direct Drive wheels were limited to PC-only for a long time, Fanatec has finally released the console compatible variants of their top of the line Podium racing wheel. This wheel has been made with an immense level of attention to detail. If you’re a serious sim racer looking for the absolute best racing wheel compatible with the Playstation 4, nothing beats a direct drive. With industry leading features comes a steep price though, the Podium wheel alone costs 4 times as much as a PS4 itself. Is it worth it? After spending 4 hours in iRacing with it, I think yes. This direct drive wheel provides the closest to a true to life driving experience that modern technology can offer.

Steering wheel: The F1 style Alcantara wrapped wheel is one the best I’ve ever driven. It’s capable of producing 20 Nm of torque, super quick. And did I mention, it’s WIRELESS.

Force Feedback: The wheel is bolted directly onto the servo motor which results in extremely quick response. I couldn’t notice any latency whatsoever. Force feedback is detailed and crisp, enough to make you feel every bump in the road. If you’re serious about sim racing and willing to spend over a grand and a half on a steering wheel, this is as good as it gets.

Pedals: With Fanatec’s modular configuration, you can pair your Podium racing wheel with any Fanatec pedals. My recommendation would be the ClubSport Pedals V3. Steering wheel: Right off the bat, the CSL Elite steering wheel looks great. It doesn’t have a racing vibe to it, rather a minimalist one, with subtle blue accents. The metal wheel rim is wrapped in leather which adds a nice touch of realism to the whole experience.

Force Feedback: Response from the wheel base is extremely strong, enough to shake your desk if the mounting screws are not tightened properly. Strong and rich force feedback is more than expected from a $500 steering wheel, what differentiates this one is the speed. The kickback is so strong yet so quick, and it stays silent while doing all the heavy work.

Pedals: The best set of pedals to pair with the CSL Elite wheel would be the Fanatec CSL Elite Pedals LC. They connect directly to the wheel base and are easy to get used to. The brake pedal includes a load cell kit which adds a bit of extra resistance. They lack a degressive clutch pedal though, which can be found on the ClubSport Pedals V3. At under $200, they’re a great starting point. You can go for V3s if you absolutely need the extra realism on the clutch and throttle.

Thrustmaster T300 RS GT takes the crown for the best value for money when it comes to inexpensive cross platform steering wheels. It’s a belt driven wheel, supports interchangeable wheel rims, comes with a set of pedals that are better than the majority ones out there. It’s a complete sim racing package for a little over $300. It’s closer to a high end wheel than it is to a cheaper one. I’d take the Thrustmaster T300 over the Logitech G29 any day because of its superior belt-driven brushless motor and better upgrade options with Thrustmaster’s ecosystem of replaceable wheel rims and pedals.

Steering wheel: The Gran Turismo branded steering wheel is wrapped in a rubberised material and feels nice to touch. It’s a step down from leather wrapped wheels though, as rubber tends to show signs of wear over time. The grip is stronger with rubber, however.

Force feedback: Haptic kickback from the servo motor feels smooth and responsive. It’s not as good as the high end Fanatec wheels, obviously, you get what you pay for. At the same time, it is smoother and more precise than any similarly priced wheel I’ve driven, it’s a sweet deal for the price.

Pedals: The T300 RS GT package comes bundled with Thrustmaster T3PA GT pedals which are basically the same T3PA pedals with minor cosmetic changes. All 3 pedals have adjustable pedal faces and offer 10-bit resolution. I found them to be on par with the Logitech G29 pedals for the most part. The brake pedal though, is a notch above, with the included conical rubber mod for extra tension.

Shifter and Handbrake: The Thrustmaster T300 RS GT steering wheel is compatible with Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter and TSS Handbrake Sparco Mod + add-ons.

Logitech G29 is a budget-friendly steering wheel for casual racers. If you’re just starting out and buying your first steering wheel, it’s not that bad. You’re going to appreciate the thrill of a realistic driving experience. However, Logitech’s substandard helical gear system makes the G29 hard to recommend, with many similarly priced options out there, like the Thrustmaster T150 and T300, which perform better. The lack of interchangeable wheels and pedal options means there’s no upgrade path either.

Steering wheel: The G29’s 11” metal wheel rim is wrapped in leather and provides a sturdy grip. The clamp system is also great for stable operation. The paddle shifters feel slightly mushy and might need some getting used to. Overall, the Logitech G29 is a good enough wheel for the price.

Force feedback: It is mostly a hit (sometimes a miss). It feels responsive and making corners felt realistic in Dirt Rally, but I could notice some cogging here and there. Gear driven motors are not the best at producing detailed force feedback. Nonetheless, it’s not a bad experience if you’re trying a wheel for the first time.

Pedals: The clutch pedal is a nice addition for a budget racing wheel. All 3 pedals offer 8-bit resolution with some extra precision on the brake pedal. These pedals are not a game changer by any means, they are on-par with the Thrustmaster T3PA pedals at best. The lack of any upgrade options is a huge bummer.

Shifter: The Logitech G29 steering wheel is compatible with Logitech G Driving Force Shifter.

Thrustmaster’s entry level force feedback wheel for PS4, the T150 is a great choice for racers on a tight budget. It’s a great hit among “bang for the buck” chasers. If you’re looking to get into sim racing at the lowest cost possible, this is the one to get. It is available in two variants, both with the same wheel but different pedals. The “Pro” version is bundled with the T3PA pedals (with clutch) instead of the 2 pedal set in the standard version. This wheel is miles ahead of the basic offerings like the Thrustmaster T80 or the Hori Racing Wheel Apex. I highly recommend spending a little bit more and getting the T150/T150 Pro instead of those $100 wheels which are a jest in the name of simulation.

Steering wheel: The wheel rim is made out of plastic which is complemented with rubber grips for comfort. It doesn’t feel as cheap though, the paddle shifters are constructed with metal and the overall layout is very similar to other Thrustmaster wheels.

Force feedback: Response from the T150 is quick and smooth (-ish). I could notice some roughness at times but considering the price of this wheel, I can’t complain too much. In my opinion, it’s belt/gear hybrid motor is still a better performer than the Logitech G29 (which costs more). For less than $200, any level of force feedback is better than none.

Pedals: I advocate the “Pro” version of T150 due to the bundled T3PA pedals. Racing on them is significantly more enjoyable than the 2 pedal set on the standard T150. A clutch pedal is must if you plan on getting the shifter add-on. The T3PA pedals also include a progressive brake mod which makes braking feel much more natural.

Both the Thrustmaster T80 and the Hori Racing Wheel Apex have very identical specifications, and the experience is also very similar. Without force feedback, there’s not much to judge. They’re both made of plastic and the wheels are fine on the comfort part, but there’s no feel to it. They’re like steering wheels with the inner hardware of a controller. The turning radius on these is very low, they cannot be hard mounted, and upgrade options or shifter add-ons are non-existent.

Why you shouldn’t buy a cheap PS4 racing wheel

These cheap steering wheels are based on bungie-centering mechanism, similar to the thumbsticks of a controller. Driving on any steering wheel is better than a controller, you can turn the car with precision. But there’s going to be no realism. Where you are fighting against the wheel with a force feedback motor, without it you’re just going to be relying on muscle memory.

Honestly, I wouldn’t suggest wasting money on these, instead save up and buy something that has a force feedback motor. To put it in simple words, if you’re even slightly interested in a “realistic” experience, you’re better off paying $50 extra and getting the Thrustmaster T150. With a small jump in price, the additional value you’re getting is phenomenal.
